Joy

If then there is any encouragement in Christ, any consolation from love, any sharing in the Spirit, any compassion and sympathy, make my joy complete: be of the same mind, having the same love, being in full accord and of one mind. ~Philippians 2:1

Grace and peace to you on this cool Saturday afternoon. I pray that you are able to enjoy the outdoors, whether it’s stepping outside for a walk, run, or bike ride or simply opening a window for a short while.

Tomorrow’s reading from Paul’s letter to the Philippians begins with a request: “be of the same mind, having the same love, being in full accord and of one mind” – a timely request on the eve of a potential government shutdown. I ask that you keep Congress in your prayers – that they find a just and compassionate resolution. Please also pray for those who will be impacted by a government shutdown. The least among us are most at risk.

I am grateful that the people of St. Peter’s seek to build a better community, whether it is through our workplace, our homes, or our neighborhoods. We are a people called to imitate Jesus who lived for the sake of others. Jesus, who could claim equality with God, instead rejected divine status and embraced humanity to the point of death on the cross so that all people might have life and have it abundantly.

You are in my heart as you prepare for worship tomorrow–bring your pets and lawn chairs! It is my desire that when we gather you encounter God’s love and find hope, sustenance, and direction. May our life together make joy complete.
