Foolishness
For the message about the cross is foolishness to those who are perishing, but to us who are being saved it is the power of God. 1 Corinthians 1:18
Dear People of St. Peters,
Grace and peace to you on this drizzly Saturday. Perhaps it’s a good day to stay inside and read a book, talk with a loved one over tea, or take a nap. Perhaps it’s a day to run errands, grocery shop, and cheer your children on the field or court. Whatever day it is for you, may it bring joy and spread love.
Paul’s message to the Corinthians about the foolishness of the cross reminds us all that no matter our circumstances in life – our power, prestige, intellect, memory, reason, or lack thereof – another narrative and set of principles prevails – the narrative of the redemption of the world made possible by the love of God embodied in life, death, and resurrection of Christ. The Christian life is filled with paradoxes: The source of life gave up his life so that all might have life. The master is the servant of all. To find life we must lose it. The cross is the way of life.
Come and worship the One who loves you most. Draw close to God. Be swept up in the epic narrative of God’s steadfast love, a love that is foolish in the eyes of the world, but which sustains us all. It will transform you. You will become what you behold.
(Note: Many have asked to read Annie Campell’s remembrance of Don Campell. One of Don’s favorite sermons was the last Christmas sermon by his older brother, the Rev. Edmund Campbell Jr.)
Be well friends, and see you in church tomorrow.
