Get close
Jesus went to her [Simon’s mother], and taking her by the hand, raised her up; and the fever left her. ~Mark 1:31
Grace and peace to you on this first weekend of February. I pray that wherever you are, the sun’s rays have fallen across your face and warmed your heart. It’s a beautiful clear day.
Did you know that one third of the gospel according to Mark is composed of stories of healing and exorcism? Mark devotes more words to stories of Jesus’ healing ministry than to his passion and death.
Mark is telling us something about the meaning of salvation. Salvation is less about what happens after this life and more about the living. Salvation is about healing. Salvation is when people are returned to wholeness and restored into community.
You share in Jesus’ ministry of healing and can participate in the salvation offered by Jesus. What we learn from the story of Jesus healing Simon’s mother is that the first step in healing another person is to go to where they are. Reach out. Get close. That’s when wholeness begins to return…when relationships are built.
As you consider your own ministry as a Christian, wow can you be a source of healing in this world? What are the ways that you can draw close to those in need of healing – the sick, the dispossessed, the captives, and the stranger? How can you do your part in restoring wholeness in others and building community?
Remember, the first step is to get close, just like Jesus did for Simon’s mother.
Tomorrow is the first Sunday of the month. We will hear the children sing an anthem and David+ will preach a children’s homily. We will also bless a new cross for the children’s chapel.
See you tomorrow!
