Creation
“Arise, my love, my fair one, and come away.” Song of Solomon 2:8
Peace and grace to you. On this Labor Day weekend we give thanks to all those who labor to provide the food, goods, and services that enrich our lives. May we remember our own work as Christians: to respect the dignity of every human being and our own call to build a better community in which all people and creation flourish.
Tomorrow begins the Season of Creation at Saint Peters (September 1 - October 6). We set aside this time to remember that we are keepers of creation and called to care for the earth. Our worship will include special prayers and our adult forums will be led by our Creation Care Team. Take a look at what is planned.
We have been gifted with a beautiful 5-acre campus. As part of your practice during the Season of Creation, I invite you to walk the grounds. Notice the stand of Loblolly pines, the rose bushes, azaleas, magnolia trees, tulip trees, and more. Wander to the memorial garden or outdoor chapel and sit awhile in the presence of God. Listen to the birds. Give thanks.
The Song of Solomon, which you will hear tomorrow in worship, is a book of love poems. The passage tomorrow draws on imagery of the earth with flowering trees and singing birds in springtime. When our children were young, we spent a week every summer hiking the White Mountains in New Hampshire. Every day was magical. We discovered brightly colored caterpillars on the forest floor, heard Barred owls sing at night, and glimpsed vistas from mountain tops. These weeks deepened our love for creation.
May you find respite and joy in the outdoors this Labor Day weekend.
