Dwelling Place

“How lovely is they dwelling place.” Psalm 84:1

Peace and grace to you. Many children have returned to school this past week, greeting friends-already-made and friends-to-be. I remember coming back after a few month’s summer break as a child. Each school year was a new beginning, a time to reinvent yourself. Some of us had even grown a few inches since June. It was a lovely return.

Saint Peter’s is welcoming families back too with two pool parties — one today for youth in Grades 6-12 and another tomorrow for children up to grade 5 and their parents. I can hear the splashes already from up here on Lake Seneca!

Parents—don’t forget to register your children for Sunday School. A team of faithful adults are ready to lead our classes. Welcome Sunday is September 8. First day of classes in September 15th.

This week away in New York State reminds me of the grandeur of creation. The views of Lakes Seneca and Cayuga are expansive, made more grand juxtaposed with the intimate images of grapes on nearby vineyards. Indeed, as Psalm 84 procliams “how lovely is this dwelling place!” As we take in the beauty of this place, I am reminded of Movement IV of A German Requiem by Johannes Brahms based on Psalm 84. Take a moment to listen. Prepare to be transported to God’s dwelling place.

Tomorrow you will hear a reading in which King Solomon praises God for God’s enduring presence and generous welcome of all people. God’s dwelling place knows no boundaries. We are a people of generous welcome too! I pray that those who visit Saint Peter’s looking for a faith home hear of God’s great name, mighty hand, and outstretched arm. I pray they experience God’s welcome through us.

I am grateful Saint Peter’s is filled with joy and life. I give thanks for our eagerness to share God’s love with all who pass through our doors into God’s dwelling place.

I will be praying with you tomorrow as you gather at St. Peter’s to worship God. It’s the final Sunday of the sermon series, “Dwelling in the Household of God.”
