Rooted
“I pray that…Christ may dwell in your hearts through faith, as you are being rooted and grounded in love” (Ephesians 3:17)
Over the past few weeks we have been reading Paul’s letter to the Ephesians. In the excerpt above, Paul offers his earnest prayer for this fledgling Christian community – that Christ dwells in their hearts as they are being rooted and grounded in love. As Christians we too find our roots in God’s love. What an incredible gift. Paul’s letter to the Corinthians, helps us to understand what God’s love looks like:
Love is patient; love is kind; love is not envious or boastful or arrogant or rude. It does not insist on its own way; it is not irritable; it keeps no record of wrongs; it does not rejoice in wrongdoing but rejoices in the truth. It bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things. Love never ends” (1 Corinthians 4:1-8)
We fall short of showing this love. Of course we do. We are human. Yet we are rooted in this love and called to be this love in the world. May we, on this day and in the days to come, remain rooted in God’s love. The world desperately needs it.
